The first soap was discovered by accident. Ancient Babylonians created soap around 2800 BC by mixing animal fats with wood ash. It was originally used to clean wool and cotton, not skin.
Deodorant is over 130 years old. The first commercial deodorant, called Mum, appeared in 1888. It was a waxy cream applied by hand—roll-ons didn’t exist until the 1950s.
Shampoo originated in India. The word “shampoo” comes from the Hindi word chāmpo, meaning “to massage.” Herbal hair cleansers made from soapnuts and herbs were used centuries before modern shampoos.
Conditioner was invented for men. French perfumer Edouard Pinaud created the first conditioner in 1900, calling it Brilliantine, to soften men’s beards and moustaches before it became popular for women’s hair.
